ABOUT ME
I’m Zak Younger Banks, a multi-disciplinary artist working in music production, photography, videography and design. I’m also a guitarist and songwriter and release music under a solo project. I’ve self released several singles and EPs and have worked on a range of projects from music projects to theatre productions, producing and playing music, designing promotional materials, shooting photos and videos (long and short form) and running social media campaigns. I studied Traditional Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and currently split my time between Newcastle and Glasgow.
MUSIC BIO
Zak Younger Banks is a singer-songwriter and producer based in Newcastle and Glasgow. Whilst working across multiple projects in music and theatre, Zak has published a series of releases since 2017 and gained recognition from BBC Introducing, Amazing Radio and received support from Help Musicians, Ivors Academy, Generator, and The Glasshouse ICM. Zak’s latest single, ‘Shadow in the Sun’ was BBC Introducing Track of the Week and featured on the ‘Best of Track of the Week’ show. Described on the show as “Shoegaze Jazz” and “if Bon Iver and Thundercat had a baby”, Zak’s music is a combination of thoughtful, introspective songwriting and wild, boundary-pushing production. While each release is an exploration of new sonic possibilities, from energetic synth-pop hits to intricate arrangements of guitars and vocal harmonies, all of his work is tied together with a distinctively heavy-hearted musicality and a deepening obsession with songwriting. Live shows are a dynamic combination of big, lush arrangements played with a band of jazz and traditional musicians, and intimate stripped-back songs. Appearing as producer and session guitarist on several neo-trad releases and touring with multiple projects for most of his career Zak has been steadily growing recognition for his own music, and in 2024 begun development of his debut album.
